On Eagle's Wings Ecumenical Ministries

A Letter from AnnE

Dear Friends of On Eagle’s Wings,

Although difficult to share, I write to advise you that I have accepted the invitation to serve within a church of the ELCIC, Alberta and the Territories Synod in Canada. How difficult it will be to leave the ministry of On Eagle’s Wings on June 30th of this year. After much discernment I know this is the right decision. I would have loved to have given you this information face-to- face, but the miles between us make that a challenge.

Thank you for being part of this ministry with me since 2002. So much has occurred. God has blessed On Eagle’s Wings to share the love of Christ and walk with the people of the North. Together we have walked with prayer and financial supporters. We walked until the gifts of aircraft were received so we could fly and walk with many. Respect between cultures and denominations grew. God gave a permanent home to On Eagle’s Wings. From adult Christian Education, to northern Sunday School teacher training, to southerners serving in the North and learning so many things together – it has all been exciting. A full list would be too long to include. Because of what God did in the hearts of our founder Pastor Lee Berry, boards, denominations, northerners and southerners – that beginning dream of On Eagle’s Wings became a reality and continues to be so. This lived-out dream has been a gift to me.

I said yes to the call to join On Eagle’s Wings with you. I, too, embraced the dream God had given. At that time I said, “With Catholics, Anglicans and Lutherans, aboriginal and non-aboriginal people, I hold to the reality and task of working together as God leads.” That has not changed for me – although physically leaving, I hold to that task but now as a servant with a supporting church of On Eagle’s Wings.

God has not failed us. God may not have answered all our concerns or given quick and easy responses to our challenges but God was and will continue to be with On Eagle’s Wings. My confidence with what my partner, The Rev. Lesley Hand, is doing and will do is absolute. Together we have seen Melissa May, On Eagle’s Wings Diaconal Minister, grow and serve in the North. Our pilots, volunteers and supporters like you are faithful. There is still room for you to invite others to walk with our friends in the North. What an absolute blessing!

There are so many stories I will hold in my heart in the years to come. One I shared a few years ago is a favourite of mine. It is about a little boy who lives in an isolated and remote community in the Northwest Territories. A terrible plane accident had occurred. This is why On Eagle’s Wings was invited to come and be with the children and families. One of the helps was to have a Bible Camp. Each day a little boy, Jack, arrived. He did not say a word. Finally Jack quietly shared, “My sister died in the plane crash.” Ironically the curriculum being taught was named SMILE. Each opening session included throwing a beach ball with the word smile on it. As each child caught the ball they were instructed to say their name and why they smile. I was uncertain whether to throw the ball to Jack. But, on the last day Jack kept waving his hand in the air so I could not ignore him. I threw the ball. Jack caught it and said in a loud voice, “My name is Jack. I smile because Jesus loves me!” Jack says it all – it is why On Eagle’s Wings continues to walk with our northern friends.

Thank you for your willingness to support me during these past years. Thank you for your prayers. Thank you for the privilege of serving and walking together. Thank you for all you do and will do for this ministry. My prayers continue for you all and most importantly the people of the North and for a boy named Jack. May you all continue to experience the love of Christ in your lives and also as you serve together with On Eagle’s Wings. I will miss you.

Walking together where God is still leading,

AnnE Zimmerman, Co-Director
